Did we need him to refute it? The plain
teaching of Scripture is that most will
take the broad path to destruction,
rather than trust in Christ for salvation:

““Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is
the gate and broad is the way that leads
to destruction, and there are many who
go in by it. Because narrow is the gate
and difficult is the way which leads to
life, and there are few who find it.”
(Matthew 7:13–14, NKJV)

Here are several other passages that
emphasize there is no universal
salvation for the lost, but rather
salvation through faith in Christ alone:

1. John 14:6: "Jesus said to him, 'I am
the way, and the truth, and the life. No
one comes to the Father except through
me'" (ESV).

2. John 3:18: "Whoever believes in him
is not condemned, but whoever does not
believe is condemned already, because he
has not believed in the name of the only
Son of God" (ESV).

3. 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9: "In flaming
fire, inflicting vengeance on those who
do not know God and on those who do not
obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They
will suffer the punishment of eternal
destruction, away from the presence of
the Lord and from the glory of his
might" (ESV).

4. Revelation 20:15: "And if anyone’s
name was not found written in the book
of life, he was thrown into the lake of
fire" (ESV).

5. Matthew 25:46: "And these will go
away into eternal punishment, but the
righteous into eternal life" (ESV).

6. Luke 13:24: "Strive to enter through
the narrow door. For many, I tell you,
will seek to enter and will not be able"
(ESV).

7. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: "Or do you not
know that the unrighteous will not
inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be
deceived: neither the sexually immoral,
nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men
who practice homosexuality, nor thieves,
nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor
revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the
kingdom of God" (ESV).

8. Romans 2:8: "But for those who are
self-seeking and do not obey the truth,
but obey unrighteousness, there will be
wrath and fury" (ESV).

9. Hebrews 10:26-27: "For if we go on
sinning deliberately after receiving the
knowledge of the truth, there no longer
remains a sacrifice for sins, but a
fearful expectation of judgment, and a
fury of fire that will consume the
adversaries" (ESV).

10. Mark 9:43-48: "And if your hand
causes you to sin, cut it off. It is
better for you to enter life crippled
than with two hands to go to hell, to
the unquenchable fire" (ESV).

These passages show salvation is not
universal for the lost but is available
only to those who place their faith in
Christ and obey His Word.

Have you heard the good news Christ died
for our sins (†), and God raised Him
from the dead?

That Christ died for our sins shows
we're sinners who deserve the death
penalty. That God raised Him from the
dead shows Christ's death satisfied
God's righteous demands against our sin
(Romans 3:25; 1 John 2:1-2). This means
God can now remain just, while forgiving
you of your sins, and saving you from
eternal damnation.

On the basis of Christ's death and
resurrection for our sins, call on
the name of the Lord to save you:
"For "everyone who calls on the name
of the Lord will be saved."" (Romans
10:13, ESV)

Exactly, these sola fide people think they can say "I believe", and go on
their lives as normal, and expect to be saved. To be saved requires active
effort to truly love God and believe in Him *at least*. Faith without works
is dead (James 2:14-17); the Bible states so very clearly. Everyone CAN be
saved, but few WILL.

You raise a good point about the
connection between faith and works. When
Paul speaks of justification, like in
Romans 3:28, he means that we are made
right with God by faith alone, apart
from works of the law. This reflects how
God declares us righteous based on our
faith in Christ’s finished work. No one
can earn salvation by their own efforts
(Ephesians 2:8-9), because salvation is
God’s gift to us, not a result of our deeds.

James, however, is addressing a
different audience and concern. When he
says "faith without works is dead"
(James 2:17), he emphasizes that genuine
faith *reveals itself* through actions.
He’s speaking about how believers show
their faith outwardly—especially in the
sight of others. Good works justify us
in the sense of showing men that we are
those who truly believe. However, they
don’t contribute to our justification
before God. Instead, they demonstrate
the authenticity of our faith to those
around us.

So while Paul and James might seem to be
in tension, they actually complement
each other. Paul focuses on how we are
declared righteous before God, while
James speaks of how we show that faith
through our lives, making it visible to
others. True saving faith will produce
good works, but those works themselves
don’t earn salvation.

This balance helps us avoid the extremes
of thinking that either faith or works
alone can save us. Faith is the root,
and works are the fruit.

Absolutely. Both apostles speak the same truth, but simply different
perspectives of it. Faith is the only way to salvation; one cannot attain
salvation via works only. However, true faith will nearly always manifest
itself through works.

Don't adherents to universal salvation (erroneously) believe all are saved
(or all Christians at least)?
