Warning - Beware of Trolls on Usenet
The open and uncensored nature of Usenet draws trolls and mentally ill persons whose sole aim is to disrupt peaceful enjoyment of
the network. Such deranged people are drawn to Usenet to exploit its open nature as an opportunity to harass and abuse other people. They do this because there is no centralized way to hold them accountable or punish them for their bad behavior. You must take the initiative to punish them for their bad behavior by blocking them in your own newsreader software. These guidelines for identifying trolls will help you to create and maintain a positive experience free of the weirdness and disruption caused by Usenet trolls.
The moment you see a troll or mentally ill stalker say something crazy, cruel, or insulting, add them to your news reader filters so that you will no longer see messages from them. Never respond to such sick persons as any response only fuels their stalker rage.
Never respond to a troll. Some of the trolls here are extremely mentally ill and highly aggressive. They will take your response as an invitation, like vampires do.
Certain sick persons say the same thing over and over again. These are the worst kind of trolls. Their intention is to weary you from repeated exposure to nonsense, abuse, and whataboutery, driving you away from Usenet. Don't let them drive you away. Add them to your killfile filters.
If a response seems, 'a little off' this is usually a troll trying to set you up for abuse. If the response is even a 'little off' immediately block the troll and do not respond.
Another kind of troll repeatedly 'quote replies' to other trolls, to get the troll articles past your killfile filters. When you notice someone repeatedly quoting trolls and responding to them, either he is a mentally sick individual, or he is just another sockpuppet for the same troll. Sometimes you can identify the repeater trolls by the fact that they rarely if ever trim or snip replies in a thread. They re-post endless walls of word salad quote replies with the full chain of useless troll text growing in every new post. They know that you must scroll through a long message just to find their nonsense, wasting your valuable time. Block that profile as well.
The troll is not interested in your point of view. The troll is not interested in being corrected even when he is clearly wrong. He is only interested in annoying, distracting, and harassing you to waste your time and prevent useful communication that could bring people together. The troll hates that and wants to destroy it in the cradle. Trolls have a dark triad personality with narcissistic arrogance that is indescribably vast. You can not reason with them. They only want to destroy your peace.
Once you stop seeing troll posts and quote replies to trolls, you have probably got most of the trolls blocked in your filters. Remain vigilant. If someone is saying things, 'a little off' that is the red flag to add that person to your killfile.
Real discussion has depth and / or purpose. If there is neither depth nor purpose in a post or response, it is almost assuredly a mentally deranged person who should be added to your killfile. People who are not mentally sick have something useful to discuss. If it isn't useful, it's probably the subtle tactics of a troll. You know what to do. Never give such monsters the time of day.
And so, you know all about all that is going on.
